Rocky Mountaineer, Vancouver and Seattle

Rocky Mountaineer Goldleaf Service through Canada via Seattle/VancouverSeattle

Dennis and I just returned from a l3 day adventure to Seattle for a Holland America Agents' Opportunity to visit two Holland America ships, the Oosterdam and the Amsterdam, gorgeous ships, have lunch and tours aboard the ships, tour Seattle, shop at Nordstroms, visit the Gene Juarez spa and shop the famous Seattle Market where fish vendors throw fish to each other. I found some great little vendors who market their wares among the hustle and bustle at the Market where you can sample the freshest of cherries and buy a snack cup-full for $1 CA.

Vendors I especially liked:Chukar Cherries has great pie fillings and ice cream toppings. 1 800 204 5679 or www.micks.comMy favorites were the cranberry pepper jelly, cabernet pepper jelly and private preserve (double pepper, mild).Woodring Orchards at javafci@earthlink.net has Huckleberry Jam. As you probably already know, huckleberries grow only in the wild and there is limited production because of the limited source. They haven not yet been grown commercially. We came home with a jar plus real Huckleberry Honey, not flavored with huckleberries, but produced by the bees that love the huckleberry flowers..YumSnoogualmie Valley Honey Farm, 10052 416th Ave. St., North Bend, WA 800 643 2995 or www.honeyexpress.com for that wonderful, authentic huckleberry honey.

Chikatos Attic for gorgeous hand-made vintage silk kimono purses with beautiful fringes, ivory trinket tassels and artistic colors. I loved this vendor and, of course, came home with one of her little bags. Unfortunately, you will have to visit the market to find her, but that's not a problem, I'm sure.

Restrooms are scarce at the Market, but Lowells for breakfast or lunch has a restroom on their top floor. It's about midway down to the right (north) from the fish vendors and you don't have to buy anything to use the restroom, although their breakfasts are huge and not too healthy, so very good.

While near the market, we visited Sur le Table and acquired a little collection of Japanese artistic dippers and had them shipped home to us.Highlights of Seattle included a visit to the space needle easily accessed by the monorail just by or Sheraton Towers Hotel. But I visited the Inn at the Market at 86 Pine Street, Seattle 98101 to view this beautiful little hotel and pick up brochures and rate sheets for clients. It is lovely and so convenient to the Market . It has a nice little courtyard with salon and shops and a spot for tea outdoors. I liked this hotel for a charming, romantic getaway. And, I can obtain exceptional rates for you, if you are thinking about Seattle as a destination or a pass-through to catch a cruise.

Seattle is a huge cruise embarkation spot now and the city is vibrant and enthusiastic about having visitors. The Gene Juarez spa was a world-class operation. I needed a touch up hair color and cut and didn't have time before leaving Memphis, so I booked with a young colorist who did such a great cut and style and color that I got her recipe for base color to bring home to my colorist. 1/2 #7, 1/2 #8.3 and majivel 20 volume developer....I know you'll appreciate my sharing that information. ha. I loved the spa so much, I returned the next day for the best massage ever which included a warm foot bath while waiting and very personal attention.

A girl trip to Seattle would be fun and we could stay at the Inn at the Market.....I know just the right places, including Sephora for everything to beautify, and a little independent shop which has been in operation for 25 years with very special artisans hand-colored scarves and purses and called Nubia. They have clothes even I can wear (flowing, not waist definitive) and they are strikingly beautiful. Ask about the scarf and purse that matches my Missook suit. I love them.

We had read about the Seattle library which has won many architectural awards, so visiting the library was a must. It was stunning and Seattle is so proud of that glitzy, colorful maze of all things educational and very friendly, proud-to-be-there librarians and assistants. Computer banks are everywhere and on the 5th floor you can get a visitor's pass for free Internet access for the day to check your e-mail at home. That certainly beats $7.50 per minute some cruiselines charge...Yes! Visit the brightest deep chartreuse bathroom I have ever seen, in fact, the only one I have ever seen.

We had read in Passport (my personal favorite travel newsletter) about Troiani (pronounced trey-ani) upscale, fine dining Italian restaurant within walking distance of our hotel, so we made reservations and had one of our favorite meals of our trip. The Ceasar had a fresh lime flavor and appetizers of peppers, olives and white beans with olive oil (complimentary) were extraordinary. The bread was wonderful. We met the owner, Rich Troiani who greeted us warmly and seemed genuinely glad to see southern visitors. He wasn't nearly as happy as we were with our experience there!

The Sheraton Hotel Towers is a great convention, business hotel with lovely top floor indoor pool and workout center overlooking Seattle. They have coffee up there, too, and we were up early because of our time difference, so we were up there every morning taking in scenery and refreshing our bodies for our fun-filled days ahead.Seattle is the # 2 Wine Destination in the country (CA is still # 1). And, it is among the top 10 art destinations in the USA. It is a dog-friendly and child-friendly city and #1 most college educated city.

Important Trivia: We learned that there were 235,000 passengers bumped off of airlines the first quarter of this year...Lesson, don't fly the day of your cruise, fly the day before! Have a back up plan for being bumped, as it is likely to happen to you. It has happened to us twice, once to Venice, once to San Juan...Luckily, we planned ahead and were fine with meeting our connections although we missed some prepaid hotel stays and transfers...Oh, well, even the best-laid plans...

We took a dinner cruise with probably 200 other travel agents on the Victoria Clipper. The Clipper was nice and well appointed for a dinner-cruise-type ship and took us to little cays we couldn't have visited on our own where we saw yachts, beautiful homes on the water and local boating enthusiasts. Dinner was good and lots of good visiting with travel professionals made this a worthwhile pastime.I learned how to get a special showing at Dale Chihuli's (World renowned glass artist who did the Bellagio ceiling in their lobby) workshop. Only agents can arrange these forays with serious art glass collectors. Would that be us? We'll see. Perhaps for our girl trip? Or, we could just visit the Glass Museum.

We attended the Tietro Zanzinni for Love, Chaos and Dinner in the Round. It is only shown in San Francisco and Seattle. It is a zany evening, a lot like Cirque de Soleil and a very interactive funny show with skilled trapeze artists who surprise you because they are dressed like busboys and maids who clean up the theater. We got stage seating so we were right in the way of "we didn't know what". Sure enough, when a waiter dressed like Charlie Chaplin poured our water, he spilled a drop on the white starched cloth, threw up his hands, called his friends over and whisked everything off the table and with a big flourish, then replaced our cloth and accouterments. Silly, silly, but lots of fun. Tickets are about $75 per person, but try to get right beside the circle-in-the-round stage at floor level. It isn't a large theater and dinner was very nice. It is a looooong show, about 3 hours, as the show takes place during dinner. Clowns and funny characters come out to announce, "THE SALAD IS READY" singing a little ditty as they prepare you for the next course. Fun, crazy. The couple at our table for 4 (young, chic) had been there 4 times within the last month. Once is fine for me, unless I would want to take friends who had never seen Zinzanni...Then, it would be fun again to share that experience. I have a contact there who could probably arrange the best seating for you with a little advance notice. Don't think it doesn't help to know someone, especially a great travel consultant. Always!

P.S. Delta First Class from Memphis to Seattle in seats 1 C and D Bulkhead had NO leg or foot room. Always ask for seats further back in First Class, or, of course, I can do that for you! Also, airline tickets must match passport exactly when flying internationally. They won't let you board, if your names don't match and you will be asked to buy a walkup ticket which will be 4 times what your original tickets cost....Beware.

Vancouver, Kamloops, Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff , Calgary
We flew to Vancouver from Seattle, but next time would take a ferry or bus or rental car to avoid airport travel. The time would have been the same and much less hassle and more scenic.Because we had booked the Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf Service, we were met by our Limousine Driver at the airport and delivered to our hotel, the Sutton Place, a 5 Diamond Hotel. We had a little salad at the Market next door and checked our e-mails at the little cafe there for $3.00.We had breakfast at the pool the next morning and a nice swim, then walked a block to catch the double-decker bus for a tour of Vancouver for 2 hours all around the city with good commentary. We found the Wedgewood Hotel, stopped for a spot of tea and cheese and crackers, grapes and thin apple slices and picked up brochures and rate cards for clients. This is a boutique hotel right in the heart of Vancouver, so nice little place to call home.

We found a tailor in Vancouver who had been recommended and Dennis was fitted for a spiffy dark, shiny, lightweight wool, navy sportcoat with beautiful brass buttons. It should be ready in time for our October 1 cruise on Celebrity Constellation to New England and Canada. Our dollar goes further in Canada in some instances, not in others. For instance, Spanx Control Top panties are $35 CA but only $25 in US. (I should know) So, the value of our dollar isn't a true value, if the prices are higher in Canada. So, shop carefully and know prices of good you normally purchase. Canadian-made products and handmade items are usually a better buy there.

We were picked up by our Limo driver and taken to the rail station for the Rocky Mountaineer train ride. There are two check-in points, the Redleaf section on the right and the Goldleaf section on the left. We checked in and waited briefly for our embarkation, walking on a red carpet, of course, on the way to the train. Our rail car was less than half full. Tim and Sean our stewards were lots of fun. We had a double-decker, domed car and the dining portion was on the lower level and the scenic level was more than adequate for all the sights we would encounter. Lots of space, too. Osprey nests and moose were wildly announced as they were sighted. We traveled the first day to Kamloops where we were taken out of town about 30 minutes to South Thompson Lake Lodge, a quaint ranch spread with homey, Victorian bedroom appointments, a nice fireplace, large dining room, with outside verandah overlooking the pool. Horses were quartered within white fences wearing in and out of the property.

We walked the property, visited a beautiful mare and her colt and gave them each a cherry from the cherry trees on the property. This is a setting for weddings, with a gazebo and beautiful black horse carriage. We met Frank and Janet and had dinner with them in the dining room beside the river. We loved meeting these new friends and subsequently had some very nice times together. I have a feeling we will meet again. At this ranch, just coincidentally, we met the camera crews and journalists and participants in an off-the-road competitive experience which will be televised. In talking with the handsome, fit, young people participating in this experience, it involves daily challenges they overcome. The participants are furnished their cars and all travel arrangements

Goldleaf service provides luggage handling and all gratuities and our luggage always arrived in our rooms before we were there (except in Banff). With Redleaf Service, luggage isn't delivered on this first overnight, so one must pack for this overnight carryon stay. We did that anyway, so we wouldn't have to get into our big bags. We arrived at Jasper Lake Lodge and had a little cabin all our own with a lake view. The walks around the lake were easy and scenic.

I went horseback riding and Dennis played golf in Jasper, then dinner in the Moose Nook. We toured the Columbia Icefields out of Jasper and were transported out onto the ice in a vehicle made especially for traveling steep terrain and then hugging the ice on the actual glacier which was as deep as the Eiffel Tower is tall....This was a first for us to actually travel on a glacier, although we have been beside many and watched many push (calf) extraneous ice into the glacial lakes.

We stopped along our way at Emerald Lake Lodge where, guess what, I picked up brochures. This is a beautiful setting with private cottages and an elegant conference center and dining room. Nice spot for the future! Our concierge (escort) and driver were just the best and they traveled with us from Jasper to Lake Louise to Banff where we stayed at Fairmont properties which were magnificent historic hotels. It was like being a part of royal history. Our concierge whose card I have for future contacts, couldn't have been more help booking golf outings, fly fishing, horseback riding and spa treatments for all 8 of us on a wonderful 44 passenger luxury motor coach outfitted with only 22 seats, so we had doublewide leg room. Yes, there were only 8 of us after leaving Kamloops...

We couldn't believe it, but it was so nice to be able to take our time, not meet any deadlines and go at a pace what was suitable for all of us. We had a picnic beside a beautiful river, and we climbed the rock hill at Moraine Lake, which isn't a Moraine made lake at all, just an historical mistaken name. We learned that Pine Beetle thrive in the Lodgepole pines and attach mature trees, so there is a lot of devastation because of those pesky creatures, not only in Canada, but all over North America. Managed forest fires seem to be helping because the little young trees aren't affected.

Arriving in Banff, we stayed at the beautiful Fairmont there and it was our favorite. We had lunch in town at Coyotes, and returned there a second day for lunch as they had THE PERFECT LUNCH, a l/2 sandwich on wonderful fresh baked bread and a bowl of sweet potato, corn chowder soup. We toured the Banff Museum and had two guided tours of the Fire Story and the Veaux Family History (pronounced VOX). We sent a poster to my sister and her husband who is an artist in Dallas. We were transferred to Calgary by limousine ( 1 1/2 hours), then spent the night at the Fairmont there. Early morning flight was at 6:45 and we were in Memphis by 4:10 in the afternoon. Nice to be in our own comfy bed again, but lots of pictures and tales to tell!
